A Edmentum Case Study
Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in Denton, TX — a Title I, dual-language campus with a large English language learner population and nearly half of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch — sought a tightly STAAR-aligned supplemental program to provide targeted practice for grades 3–5 in math, reading, and science without replacing classroom instruction. The school needed materials available in Spanish and a solution that would boost engagement and performance among diverse learners.
Wilson implemented Study Island more than a decade ago, using classroom time, a reservation computer lab, and at-home access, plus goal-based incentives like blue ribbons to motivate students. The program averaged heavy use (nearly 300 students, thousands of hours and hundreds of thousands of questions answered) and contributed to sustained gains: seven Exemplary accountability ratings, Denton ISD’s highest-performing Title I school, and recent proficiency rates of 95% reading and 93% math (ELL students: 94% reading, 92% math), well above state averages.
