Preview of the Welsh Power Case Study

Edina delivers full EPC contract to Welsh Power’s peaking plant portfolio across 14 sites based in the UK

Welsh Power, a UK energy provider, needed to address the increasing imbalance in the national electricity grid caused by the growth of renewable energy and the slow response of traditional power stations. Their challenge was to provide a cleaner, more responsive power source that could quickly meet peak demand and participate in National Grid balancing services. To solve this, they partnered with vendor Edina to develop a portfolio of peaking plants.

Edina delivered a full EPC contract, supplying, installing, and maintaining a portfolio of 14 natural gas-fired power plants across the UK using MWM TCG 2020 V20 engines. This solution provided 234MWe of capacity that can ramp up to full power within seven minutes. The results included a significant reduction in carbon emissions from 0.541kg to 0.3059kg CO2 per kWh compared to the grid average, enhanced grid stability, and a power supply safeguarded for areas at high risk of outages. Edina's implementation also carefully considered the local environment by designing the facilities to blend in with their surroundings.
