A Edina Case Study
The client, Costain Group, acting on behalf of Thames Water, faced the challenge of outdated and unreliable combined heat and power (CHP) plants at the Mogden Sewage Treatment Works. The existing units were at the end of their service life, suffered from poor reliability, high emissions, and caused significant noise pollution, all while the site required a capacity increase. Edina was contracted to supply a modern CHP solution to address these issues.
Edina implemented a solution involving three containerized MWM biogas CHP engines with a total capacity of 6MWe. The new plants were designed to overcome site space constraints and were installed while the existing facility remained fully operational. The solution drastically reduced noise levels, enabled island mode operation for power security, and improved overall efficiency. The results were significant, with the new CHP generating 47% more electricity, reducing operational costs by an estimated £100,000 per week, and enabling the site to treat 50% more sewage.
