Edina CHP reduces energy costs by £250k at Hywel Dda University Health Board NHS Hospitals

Hywel Dda University Health Board faced rising energy costs and a need to reduce carbon emissions across its NHS hospitals, Withybush General and Prince Philip. The challenge involved replacing a defunct CHP plant within a live operational environment, navigating space constraints, and ensuring no disruption to critical hospital services. The health board partnered with vendor Edina to design and implement a new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) solution.

Edina supplied, installed, and now maintains two containerized 600kWe natural gas CHP engines. The implementation required careful off-site construction and on-site integration to overcome spatial and logistical challenges. The solution delivered significant results for the customer, including potential annual energy savings of £250,000 and a reduction in carbon emissions by 1,500 tonnes. This project by Edina future-proofed the hospitals' energy supply while supporting the NHS's environmental goals.
