A Edgecore Networks Case Study
National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) sought to deploy an OpenFlow-based global Software Defined Network (ONOS SDN-IP) that could interoperate with BGP, support fast deployment of multiple BGP networks, and provide high availability. Edgecore Networks, working with the ONOS software partner, supplied its Open Networking switches—AS4610-54T 1GbE and AS5712-54X 10GbE—to enable the project at NCTU.
Edgecore Networks installed 2× AS4610-54T as L2 management/control-plane switches and 4× AS5712-54X as OpenFlow data-plane switches (PicOS in L2/L3 and OVS modes) to interconnect BGP ASes (including Amlight and KREONET) and support multiple ONOS and Quagga instances for resiliency. The ONOS SDN-IP deployment went live in May 2016, delivered fast convergence and flexible routing, was completed on schedule, established Taiwan’s first SDN‑IP network at NCTU, and helped lower build and operating costs by using Edgecore’s white‑box hardware.
