Dubai Municipality Drives CapEx Savings and Operational Simplicity

Dubai Municipality, which serves 11,000 employees across 34 departments, needed to modernize its data center because scaling with traditional networking was becoming uneconomical—forcing a rethink of capacity, core switch renewals, migration costs and overall performance. To address this, Dubai Municipality deployed Big Switch Networks’ Big Cloud Fabric together with Edgecore Networks hardware to implement an open SDN-based data center fabric.

The vendor solution used a leaf-spine Clos fabric and a single Big Cloud Fabric controller integrated with vCenter, OpenStack and VMware to automate provisioning, VM visibility and operations. With Edgecore Networks switches in the fabric, Dubai Municipality combined three physical data centers into one logical cloud, increased switching speed 42x, grew backbone capacity 16x, cut physical and logical migration costs by ~90%, reduced infrastructure size and materially lowered TCO (BCF can reduce TCO up to 50%), while eliminating core switch renewals and simplifying ongoing operations.
