3G offload Outdoor Wi-Fi Access Points in Taiwan by Chunghwa Telecom

Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s largest telecom operator, needed an outdoor Wi‑Fi solution to relieve heavy 3G congestion caused by flat‑rate smartphone data use (large photo/video uploads) and to provide seamless Hotspot 2.0 Wi‑Fi/3G access with load balancing, redundancy and scalability. Chunghwa selected Edgecore Networks’ ECW5110 (SMC2890W‑AN) dual‑band, dual‑radio outdoor access points for their high performance, PoE support and IP‑67 rugged design.

Edgecore Networks deployed ECW5110 units across cities beginning in March 2014, using features such as 16 SSIDs, EAP‑SIM auto authentication, point‑to‑point/point‑to‑multipoint bridging and controller‑based management to support multi‑operator hotspots. The Edgecore solution enabled Chunghwa Telecom to rapidly roll out outdoor hotspots island‑wide, offload substantial 3G traffic at events and public venues, and improve network capacity and resilience while providing seamless Wi‑Fi/3G user experience.
