VMware Scaling Climate Action Through Supplier Collaboration with EcoVadis

VMware, a technology company, faced the significant challenge that over 70% of its greenhouse gas emissions originated from its extensive supply chain. To address this and meet its aggressive 2030 ESG targets, VMware turned to its vendor, EcoVadis, to leverage its sustainability ratings and the Carbon Action Module (CAM) to gain visibility into and improve supplier practices.

EcoVadis provided the platform for VMware to assess its suppliers, monitor their progress, and implement a comprehensive engagement program. The solution included mandated EcoVadis assessments, a pilot program to develop training, and a scaled Sustainability Supplier Engagement Program. The results were substantial: 52% of suppliers by spend set or committed to science-based targets, leading to a 19% reduction in GHG emissions, $41 million in reduced CO2e, and a 229% return on investment. EcoVadis enabled VMware to foster supplier collaboration, drive innovation, and simplify risk identification across its value chain.
