Case Study: Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority improves BRT corridor travel times with Econolite ITS and signal priority solutions

PSTA upgrades 51 intersections with Econolite for Central Avenue BRT

The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) faced the challenge of improving mobility along a 10.3-mile corridor connecting downtown St. Petersburg to St. Pete Beach. Their existing transit service was slowed by traffic congestion and lacked an effective signal priority system. To address this, PSTA partnered with Econolite to upgrade the corridor for a new Bus Rapid Transit service called the SunRunner.

Econolite provided an integrated traffic management solution that included its Centracs Advanced Transportation Management System with a Priority module, new Cobalt traffic signal controllers, and performance measurement analytics for 51 intersections. This solution gave transit vehicles signal priority, coordinated their movement with traffic signals, and provided extensive performance data. The implementation resulted in improved travel times, greater transit reliability, and created a scalable foundation for future smart mobility applications in the region.
