Orange County, California - Customer Case Study

Orange County, California tackled severe congestion on the 11‑mile Alicia Parkway corridor—part of Phase 1 of a regional Traffic Light Synchronization Program (TLSP) covering 41 signalized intersections and weekday volumes exceeding 60,000 vehicles near I‑5. To meet goals of increasing average speeds, reducing stop/starts and lowering greenhouse gas emissions, the county engaged Econolite to provide ITS upgrades including Centracs ATMS and ASC/3 traffic controllers to enable wide‑area signal coordination and inter‑agency operations.

Econolite installed two Centracs systems (physical in Laguna Hills, virtual in Mission Viejo), deployed ASC/3 controllers, upgraded communications and implemented optimized signal timing and monitoring. Post‑deployment results included an 11% reduction in travel time, a 33.3% reduction in number of stops (up to 75% in some peak periods), an average speed increase of up to 31%, a reduction of more than 8,100 lbs. of greenhouse gases, and a projected three‑year fuel savings exceeding 1.1 million gallons.
