Oakland County, Michigan - Customer Case Study

Oakland County, Michigan, faced growing traffic demand across 61 cities and townships and wanted to improve roadway efficiency without building new roads. The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) needed more reliable, lower‑maintenance vehicle detection that could withstand harsh weather and be safer for field crews to support its large adaptive signal control system. Econolite’s Autoscope video detection was selected to meet that challenge.

Econolite deployed a countywide network of more than 2,000 Autoscope video detection cameras integrated with RCOC’s FAST‑TRAC adaptive signal system and public real‑time traffic website, providing 24‑hour traffic data, accurate detection and simpler maintenance. The Econolite solution reduced stopped delays by about 20%, improved travel times by up to 32% on major corridors, lowered maintenance costs and enhanced worker safety, while underpinning Oakland County’s real‑time traffic services and future Connected Car initiatives.
