A Econolite Case Study
Newport Beach faced severe weekend and summer traffic surges—its population can triple in hours and traffic counts exceed 100,000—while operating a 25-year-old, unsupported signal system that required a four-person Traffic Engineering Division to reactively service frequent failures, often seven days a week. To address this, the City selected Econolite and its Centracs ATMS with ASC/3 controllers as part of a Traffic Signal Modernization project to upgrade nearly 120 intersections.
Econolite’s Centracs-based solution centralized control at the City’s Traffic Management Center, bringing more than half of intersections online and reducing intersection integration time from hours to minutes. The upgrade improved system reliability, allowed traffic engineers to remotely monitor and adjust timing in real time, and enabled proactive response to construction, incidents, events, emergencies, and weather—streamlining operations and enhancing mobility across the city.
