Fort Collins, CO faced growing congestion driven by population growth, a busy university corridor and variable corridor events like truck surges and nearby rail crossings. The city had installed Econolite’s Centracs ATMS in 2013 and later activated the Centracs BlueTOAD Travel Time module while deploying TrafficCast’s BlueTOAD/BlueARGUS sensing to gain real-time speed and travel-time data for active traffic management.

Econolite’s solution integrated BlueTOAD/BlueARGUS inputs with Centracs to run a Traffic Responsive application that automatically swaps in alternate signal timing when pre-set minimum speeds are detected and restores time-of-day plans when speeds normalize. The system enabled rapid clearing of backups — for example triggering a “Truck Plan” on North College Ave, clearing rail-related queues at Lemay Ave, and mitigating detour-induced congestion on Mulberry St — delivering faster clearance of incidents and reduced recurring congestion across those corridors.
