Case Study: Hawaii Department of Transportation achieves H-3 ITS modernization and serial-to-Ethernet migration with Econolite

A Econolite Case Study

Preview of the The Hawaii Department of Transportation Case Study

Econolite Systems Was Selected as the Prime Contractor Based on the Submitted Proposal and Staff Experience

The Hawaii Department of Transportation faced obsolete serial communication devices on the H‑3 Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), with Changeable Message Signs, CCTV, traffic detectors, and barrier gates unable to reliably connect to the traffic operations center. The Hawaii Department of Transportation selected Econolite as prime contractor to test and repair aging fiber, replace serial links with Ethernet, and provide a migration plan and staff training.

Econolite tested five miles of multimode and single‑mode fiber, repaired breaks, and designed a redundant hybrid gigabit/100 Mbps architecture; the team furnished and integrated switches, terminal servers, voice gateways, and network‑monitoring software and has migrated and tested over 100 field devices to Ethernet. Econolite’s deployment delivered a resilient, monitored communications backbone that replaced legacy serial links, improved redundancy and manageability, and enabled HDOT staff to more effectively maintain ITS devices.
