A Econolite Case Study
Richmond, VA, a metropolitan center serving more than one million people, faced an aging traffic signal system that had been in service nearly 20 years and limited the city’s ITS and traffic operations. The City selected Econolite to modernize its network using the Centracs traffic management system as part of the Traffic Control & Safety Enhancements Improvements Project.
Econolite furnished, installed and integrated central hardware and software, performed database conversions and intersection graphics, and deployed 370 TS-2 Type 2 controllers and multiple TS-2 cabinets. In a follow-on contract (with partner Midasco LLC), Econolite designed the Ethernet topology and IP plan and installed and integrated a communications backbone—over 300 fiber and VDSL switches, 18 wireless radios, and 12 CCTV cameras—plus Signal Shop and TOC upgrades, training and support, giving Richmond a resilient modern network and enabling staff to manage the arterial system more efficiently with measurable infrastructure upgrades across hundreds of devices.
