A Econolite Case Study
The City of Pasadena, a long-time proponent of bicycling and Complete Streets planning, needed a way to reliably detect and differentiate bicycles across 10 key corridors to improve safety and signal timing. Pasadena DOT required a detection system capable of at least 95% bicycle differentiation accuracy and selected Econolite’s Autoscope Encore video detection with Cyclescope to meet that challenge.
Econolite installed Autoscope Encore with Cyclescope beginning in September 2016, initially upgrading 38 intersections and streaming video to the DOT’s TMC video wall; the project was partially funded by Complete Streets and CMAQ programs. The solution enabled new bicycle-focused signal strategies such as Bike Min Green, met the 95% differentiation requirement, and helped Pasadena pursue expansion to as many as 30 additional intersections.
