A Econolite Case Study
The City of Madison faced rising traffic volumes and unsafe crash rates on major corridors during the Verona Rd. (US 18/151) reconstruction, which was expected to push roughly 20% more traffic onto the McKee Rd./Fish Hatchery Rd. alternate route. To proactively manage capacity, travel-time variability, and event-driven surges, the City of Madison engaged Econolite to deploy its Centracs Adaptive signal control solution.
Econolite implemented Centracs Adaptive in July 2014, combining inductive loops, Autoscope Encore video, and microwave radar detection to feed real‑time data and retiming 13 signals along the four-mile corridor. The City saw immediate benefits: up to a 22% reduction in travel time, a 65% reduction in stops, and strong incident response—when a Beltline closure caused a ~40% traffic spike, Centracs Adaptive restored travel times to nominal within 30 minutes.
