A Econolite Case Study
In 2009 the City of Portsmouth, Virginia sought to replace its aging traffic signal system and controllers and issued an RFQ to select a software and controller standard. After evaluations and demonstrations the City selected Econolite as integrator, adopting Centracs ATMS for signal system software and the Econolite ASC/3 controller as the City standard for the new system.
Econolite implemented a phased upgrade that began with roughly 30 controller replacements and 10 TS2 Type 1 cabinets, with subsequent phases to upgrade about 90 more and a final build-out supporting up to 200 controllers on an Ethernet network. Econolite delivered the Layer 3 IP network with redundant fiber rings, wireless links, a primary and standby Traffic Operations Center with redundant servers, network switches/radios, controller data conversion, system configuration and commissioning, and integrated CCTV (Autoscope cameras via Siqura encoders). The result is centralized, redundant traffic management and monitoring capable of controlling up to 200 intersections, with staged measurable improvements through each deployment phase.
