Case Study: E.ON achieves flexible virtual power plant control with Eclipse SCADA

A Eclipse Foundation Case Study

Preview of the E.ON Case Study

The business application building virtual power plants

E.ON Connecting Energies, a business unit of E.ON, needed a flexible, vendor-neutral SCADA system to support its Virtual Power Plant (VPP) business. As it expanded its digital development efforts, the company wanted a solution with open source access and the ability to adapt the system over time. It turned to Eclipse Foundation’s Eclipse SCADA project to provide the industrial control backbone for remote equipment monitoring and control.

With Eclipse Foundation’s Eclipse SCADA, E.ON Connecting Energies connected remote generation assets through secure gateways and cellular networks to a central data center for data acquisition, monitoring, archival, visualization, and control. The system lets the company virtualize many distributed power units as one large resource, optimize their output, and sell excess energy and capacity into wholesale, reserve, and local optimization markets. While no specific numeric savings are given, the solution enabled faster customization, greater agility, and a scalable platform for growing VPP operations.
