Track Down Employee Theft Quickly and Efficiently

Albertsons Home Center, a building-supply retailer in Parksville, British Columbia, discovered an inventory discrepancy when Spruce (the lumber and building materials software they use from ECI Software Solutions) showed an item in stock that was not on the shelf. Investigation revealed a pattern of fraudulent returns being issued to a debit card instead of the original charge account, creating a time-consuming manual-review problem across roughly 250 monthly returns.

ECI Software Solutions’ Spruce developer created a dashboard report filtering returns by return type, last four digits of the card, and employee ID, allowing Albertsons Home Center to quickly identify the scope of the fraud. Using the Spruce report they found one employee had stolen more than $10,000 over six months, recovered the losses through insurance, provided evidence to police, and implemented ongoing reporting and safeguards to prevent future theft.
