Species identification in the Black Sea using multifrequency echosounder data

Echoview Software worked with Dr. Serdar Sakinan and Dr. Ali Cemal Gücü at Middle East Technical University in Turkey, where the researchers needed a way to identify species in Black Sea echosounder data despite the lack of physical samples. Their challenge was to distinguish copepods such as Calanus euxinus from fish and other organisms using multifrequency acoustic measurements.

Using Echoview, they applied Advanced Operators tools to combine two multifrequency classification methods: summing backscatter across frequencies and filtering by magnitude, and subtracting backscatter across frequencies and filtering by distance from species-specific distributions. This let them separate copepods from fish and study their distribution relative to oxygen and temperature, turning a complex processing workflow into fast, simple steps, though the case study does not report a numerical impact.
