Observing fish movements around artificial reefs off Taiwan using a multibeam echosounder

At National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan, Dr. Shiahn-wern Shyue needed a way to observe and measure fish movements around artificial reefs, where multibeam echosounder data could provide much richer information than traditional single-beam methods. Echoview Software’s Echoview was used with Reson SeaBat 7125 multibeam echosounder data to support the analysis of fish and school behavior in the water column.

Echoview Software provided tools to visualize, process, and analyze the multibeam data, including bottom detection, background removal, target and aggregation detection, tracking, and calculation of metrics such as fish number, location, depth, swimming direction and speed, length, and reef depth. The result was a quantitative description of fish distribution, relative abundance, and movement around the artificial reefs, helping monitor their impact on the ecosystem.
