Counting, sizing and tracking Chinook salmon in the Kenai River, Alaska

Aquacoustics Inc., on behalf of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, needed a faster way to estimate fish length from DIDSON data in the Kenai River while still producing Chinook salmon abundance estimates comparable to manual measurements. They worked with Echoview Software, using Echoview to support the detection, tracking, and analysis of DIDSON fish images.

Echoview Software enabled Aquacoustics to build a semi-automated workflow that counts, sizes, and tracks Chinook salmon, with many steps automated through Echoview Scripting and a custom control panel called the Kenai EV Auto-Processor.exe. The result was a method that reduced manual user interactions while still delivering comparable abundance estimates and automatic fish-length estimation from the sonar data.
