University of Edinburgh Bringing the lecture chalkboard to life

The University of Edinburgh, a world-leading research and teaching institution, needed a reliable way to capture the handwritten equations, diagrams and calculations that lecturers use to teach complex concepts. The challenge was to record both chalkboard and PC-based material automatically, without requiring lecturers to change their teaching style, and to make those resources easily accessible to students.

Partnering with Echo360, the university deployed an automated dual-source recording system that switches to chalkboard mode when projectors are off and captures combinations of inputs (chalkboard, PC, laptop, teaching desk) without lecturer setup. The solution produced seamless, complete lecture recordings, earned positive staff feedback, improved student access to vital handwritten material, and is being expanded into more rooms and collaborative learning spaces.
