Sheffield University Changing the way students engage with lectures

Sheffield University, a top-ranked Russell Group institution celebrated for its student experience, faced growing student demand for consistent access to lecture content and uneven uptake of ad-hoc recordings across departments. With a diverse, global cohort — including a management campus in China — the university needed a reliable, scalable lecture-capture approach that could meet delivery agreements and provide insight into student engagement and learning gaps.

They adopted Echo360’s video and active-learning platform on an opt-out basis, integrating it with timetabling and rolling out recording in 112 teaching spaces, increasing annual recordings from 600 to 12,000 (with 48,000 projected). The automated system and analytics improved remote access, supported timely delivery to international students, reduced student anxiety, changed classroom interaction (less note-taking, more questions), and drove high satisfaction — over 90% of students rate the tools essential or very helpful — while giving staff clear insight into tricky concepts.
