Online Trig Course Failure Rates Decline from 28% to 4% with Video and Active Learning

The University of Toledo needed a better way to support a high-enrollment online trigonometry course, where failure rates were often above 25%. Dr. Claire Stuve, a math adjunct professor and curriculum developer, used Echo360’s EchoVideo and Personal Capture tools to create a flipped online classroom with short instructional videos and active learning.

Using Echo360, Stuve built weekly video modules, tracked student engagement with analytics, and tailored additional content to areas of confusion. The results were strong: course grades improved and the failure rate dropped from 28% to 4%, while the videos also became reusable across multiple math sections and courses.
