Indian River State College Improving Student Success in Gateway Courses

Indian River State College (IRSC), a Florida community college serving about 30,000 students, faced rising pressure from state policy changes — including optional remediation and performance-based funding — that put gateway and developmental courses under scrutiny. With high attrition in introductory classes like Biology and math, IRSC needed a way to identify struggling students early and intervene in real time to protect retention and completion rates.

Using federal Title III funds, IRSC deployed the Echo360 active‑learning and analytics platform integrated with its LMS to capture lectures, run in‑class polls and quizzes, collect micro‑level engagement data, and allow anonymous student questions. Piloted in Biology One and expanded to gateway courses, the platform enabled mid‑stream remediation (including targeted tutoring) and flexible review for working students; results included developmental math completion rising from 67.4% to 76.8%, 20% of students reporting at least one grade improvement, and higher course completion among those who received targeted support.
