Breathing Life into the Age-Old Lecture Flipping the Classroom Can Increase Student Engagement

At the University of Sheffield, a lecturer in the School of Law was looking for a better way to engage students in large undergraduate classes and move away from passive 50-minute lectures. Using Echo360 in the Sale of Goods module, he flipped the classroom so students reviewed short audio recordings before class and used interactive discussion during sessions.

Echo360 helped the University of Sheffield create a more active learning environment with questions, live responses, and recorded discussions students could revisit later. The result was higher student engagement, a noticeable “buzz” in class, and improved exam performance, with students showing stronger analysis and better ability to apply course concepts.
