Preview of the SAMSØ Ferry Power System Case Study

SAMSØ ferry power system maintains ecological requirements of one of the wonders of the world

SAMSØ Ferry Power System needed an ecologically friendly way to keep ferry operations running between Samsø and mainland Denmark while reducing emissions. To solve this challenge, Eaton provided a Power Xpert 9395 Marine UPS frequency converter and EC4P programmable logic controller (PLC) to bridge the ship’s 60 Hz electrical system with the shore’s 50 Hz power.

Eaton’s reversible converter system allowed the ferry to use land-based power while moored and switch safely between shore and ship power as needed. The solution helped the ferry power down its generators in port, supporting lower CO2 emissions and delivering major environmental benefits, including up to 90% lower NOx emissions and about 20% less soot and CO2 compared with diesel-powered ferries.
