A Eaton Case Study
The Kentucky Department of Education helped support a statewide hybrid school bus initiative to address a common transportation challenge: heavy stop-and-go duty cycles that reduce fuel economy and brake life. Working with Eaton, the department and local school districts looked for a way to lower operating costs while improving the efficiency of school bus fleets.
Eaton provided its Hybrid Electric Power Systems for Thomas Built and International school buses, helping districts cut fuel use, extend brake life through regenerative braking, and reduce noise and emissions. The results were strong: one district reported mileage improving from 6.3 MPG to nearly 10–11 MPG, another averaged 9.59 MPG versus 6.3 MPG previously, and officials also saw major brake-wear reductions across hybrid fleets.
