Eaton Pumps Help Increase Efficiency of World’s Largest Diesel Engines

MAN Diesel & Turbo of Copenhagen, Denmark, needed a highly reliable hydraulic solution for its 12K98ME “Intelligent Engines,” which operate without a camshaft and must run nonstop for up to 30,000+ hours. The engines also required pumps that could run efficiently in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions while preventing cavitation. Eaton supplied Hydrokraft axial piston pumps for the application.

Eaton implemented Hydrokraft PVWS-500 piston pumps, working with the University of Dresden on a custom valve plate and adding a check-valve block to support bidirectional operation and prevent cavitation. The pumps deliver a 32,000-hour service life and improved efficiency at full ratings, and MAN Diesel & Turbo’s engines with Eaton pumps are now operating on container vessels built by Hyundai Heavy Industries and Doosan Engine, with additional use in the shipbuilding aftermarket.
