Case Study: WJLA boosts viewer engagement with Earth Networks' hyperlocal weather data and HD cameras

A Earth Networks Case Study

WJLA Telling a Better Visual Weather Story with Hyperlocal Data and Imagery

WJLA, the ABC7 affiliate serving the greater Washington, DC market (2,476,680 TV households), needed validated hyperlocal weather data and compelling visuals because airport-based reporting didn’t reflect conditions in local neighborhoods. To close that gap and boost engagement, WJLA turned to Earth Networks for HD weather cameras and weather stations to capture real-time, neighborhood-level observations and imagery.

Earth Networks’ HD camera and station network — deployed beginning in 2008 — gave WJLA live feeds and hyperlocal data they now use in nearly every weather report and as backgrounds across newscasts. The Earth Networks solution increased viewer engagement, made weather segments more lucrative with sponsors, and enabled timely local warnings (flash flooding, high winds) and coverage of events and traffic, driving more viewers back to ABC7.
