Montgomery County Department of Transportation - Customer Case Study

Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), which maintains over 5,300 lane miles, 70,000 parking spots and 78 transit routes in Maryland’s most populous county, faced the challenge of planning snow removal and safety operations across highly variable, hyper-local winter conditions and competing contractor resources. To meet this need they partnered with Earth Networks and rely on its Sferic Maps weather visualization software and Meteorological Operations Team forecasts for real-time, hyper-local radar, wind and temperature data.

Earth Networks delivered web-based visualization, real-time observations and tailored 3–5 day outlooks that MCDOT used to model storms and stage resources in advance; during Winter Storm Jonas MCDOT ran Earth Networks tools for nine days, built a response model five days before landfall, secured 825 pieces of equipment and began cleanup one day after the storm, while their snow portal received over 2.7 million hits—demonstrating Earth Networks’ measurable impact on faster, better-coordinated winter operations and public communication.
