Lee county protecting parks & recreation in Lightning-prone Southwest florida

Lee County Parks & Recreation, which manages parks, preserves and recreation facilities across 787 square miles in southwest Florida, faced unreliable lightning prediction tools after a 2012 “bolt out of the blue” fatality exposed gaps in their safety procedures. To address this, Lee County Parks & Recreation partnered with Earth Networks and adopted its Total Lightning Network (ENTLN) and Outdoor Alerting Systems to provide science-backed, real-time lightning detection and alerts.

Earth Networks deployed 23 Outdoor Alerting Systems, two weather stations, countdown clocks, mobile alerts and web-based weather visualization tied to the ENTLN, giving Lee County real-time intelligence to move people to safety. The solution detected 1,319,385 total lightning strikes over the county’s 787 square miles in 2017 and replaced unreliable prediction methods, making Lee County Parks & Recreation one of the most protected counties for thunderstorms and other severe weather.
