Early severe weather Notifications Protect students, Staff and residents

Lloyd Estates Elementary School, part of Broward County Public Schools in South Florida, faced frequent fast-forming thunderstorms, lightning and occasional tornado threats that put students and staff at risk during school hours. To gain early, actionable warnings the district adopted Earth Networks solutions, including lightning sensors, web-visualization tools, Outdoor Alerting Systems, mobile/text alerts and 24/7 meteorological support.

Earth Networks installed 55 lightning sensors across the district (covering 25 schools and other sites), integrated real-time storm visualization and automated/mobile alerts, and provided expert meteorologist analysis to support decision making. Those measures allowed administrators to halt outdoor activities, delay dismissal during a Feb. 28, 2007 storm and move students to protected areas; thanks to Earth Networks’ advance, customizable notifications, no one was injured and school leaders reported precise timing of lightning and rain clearance.
