City of Cape Coral Relies on Automated Lightning and Severe Weather Alerting System to Help Keep Citizens and Visitors Safe

The City of Cape Coral faced a persistent public-safety challenge: as one of the highest lightning-risk cities in the U.S., its 120-square-mile, 180,000+ community needed a scalable, automated way to alert residents and visitors to severe weather. Cape Coral engaged Earth Networks to provide automated lightning and severe-weather alerting, leveraging the Outdoor Alerting System (OAS) and the Earth Networks Total Lightning Network® (ENTLN).

Earth Networks deployed OAS units across 17 public parks, a web-based real-time weather visualization dashboard, and automated mobile/email/text alerts (including Dangerous Thunderstorm Alerts and NWS notices). The ENTLN’s detection of both in-cloud and cloud-to-ground strikes increased overall lightning detection by up to 250%, enabling streamlined, large-scale alerting, simpler implementation, and improved public safety and situational awareness for Cape Coral.
