Barilla’s Focus on Accurate Fuel Reimbursements and Cost Reduction

Barilla, a global leader in Italian food products with North American plants in Ames, Avon and Montreal, was aiming to cut transportation costs and fix inaccurate carrier fuel reimbursements. Relying on the DOE’s once-weekly national retail average produced distorted payments because carriers fuel at varying wholesale prices by lane, time and geography, driving overspend in a volatile market.

Barilla deployed Breakthrough Fuel Recovery, integrated with its e2open TMS, to calculate lane-, time-, tax- and geography-specific wholesale fuel prices; the solution went live in two months and was rolled out during an RFP with carrier training and LaaS support. The program delivered clearer separation of fuel and freight, better lane-level visibility and carrier relations, and more than a 20% reduction in fuel spend while enabling ongoing MPG and zero-base improvements.
