Scanning Tiny Data Matrix Codes for Naturalis ARISE Biodiversity Sampling

Naturalis Biodiversity Center, a scientific research institute, needed a highly accurate and reliable method to scan tiny Data Matrix codes attached to biological specimens collected in remote, offline environments. These codes, placed inside plastic bags and test tubes, were crucial for uniquely identifying each sample, and any scanning error would render the specimen useless for their ARISE biodiversity mapping project. They turned to Dynamsoft and its Barcode Reader JavaScript Edition for a solution.

By implementing Dynamsoft's barcode reader, the team achieved near 100% read accuracy for the challenging codes, a significant improvement over their previous open-source solution. The Dynamsoft SDK also provided the essential offline functionality required for fieldwork. This resulted in a faster, more accurate specimen collection process, drastically reducing wasted samples and greatly advancing their mission to map and monitor Dutch biodiversity.
