Royal Mail electrifies last-mile vans with Dynamon, completing 98% of duty cycles at 7 kW

Royal Mail needed to create a practical and cost-effective plan to electrify its last-mile van delivery fleet at its Enniskillen and Sheffield depots. The challenge was to determine which electric vehicles could replace their diesel vans, what charging infrastructure was required, and how to avoid overspending on unnecessary high-power chargers or excessive grid connections. They partnered with the vendor Dynamon and used its ZERO decarbonisation analysis software to build this evidence-based plan.

Dynamon used historical Trimble telematics data within its ZERO software to analyze real-world operations. The solution showed that 7 kW depot charging was sufficient for the vast majority of duty cycles at both locations, with 98% of routes completed in Sheffield and 88% in Enniskillen. Higher-power 22 kW chargers provided virtually no benefit. Dynamon also designed a right-sized charging infrastructure with fewer charge points than vehicles, significantly reducing capital spend and peak grid demand through an optimized schedule. For the few incomplete cycles caused by rare long journeys, public charging was recommended instead of overbuilding depot infrastructure.
