University of Colorado Health (UCHealth) is a nonprofit health system with 10 hospitals and more than 400 clinics serving Colorado, southern Wyoming and western Nebraska. Faced with high costs and administrative burden from tamper‑resistant paper prescriptions (printing, mailing, storage and duplicate scripts) and a regulatory requirement to use multi‑factor authentication (EPCS) for controlled‑substance e‑prescribing, UCHealth needed a convenient, secure way for mobile clinicians to issue prescriptions outside the office.

UCHealth deployed Duo Access integrated with Epic, using Duo Push to phones and smartwatches for fast, user‑friendly MFA. The solution let clinicians approve e‑prescriptions from anywhere, improved patient access and satisfaction, eliminated much paper‑related cost and enrolled thousands of users quickly after a successful pilot. Duo’s success also paved the way to expand MFA to VPN and other sensitive applications and to meet partner security requirements.
