University uses accurate weather insights to protect the safety of athletes and fans

The University of Notre Dame, home to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and an 80,000-seat open-air stadium in South Bend, faced recurring threats from severe Midwestern weather—particularly lightning, hail, and high winds—that could endanger athletes and fans and force game interruptions. To make fast, safety-focused decisions, the university needed an accurate, real-time weather monitoring solution from a trusted provider.

Notre Dame implemented DTN’s WeatherSentry Online® Turf Edition professional package, subscribing to real-time lightning detection, mobile access, customizable alerts, high-resolution mapping and overlays, and consults with DTN meteorologists. In one notable instance in 2011 the system displayed imminent lightning strikes, prompted two game suspensions and sent alerts that led officials to evacuate all 80,000 spectators into concourses for the first time in the stadium’s history; since then DTN’s WeatherSentry has repeatedly provided advance warning that helped the university suspend play and protect fans and athletes.
