Case Study: National Grid achieves more accurate, faster UK gas demand forecasts with DTN

A DTN Case Study

Preview of the National Grid Case Study

Supporting accurate energy demand forecasts for the United Kingdom

National Grid, the operator of Great Britain’s high‑voltage electricity transmission network and high‑pressure gas system, needed the most accurate weather information available to forecast gas demand for nearly 68 million people up to five days ahead. After testing vendors on data accuracy, flexibility and responsiveness, National Grid chose DTN for its high‑quality weather data and Composite Weather Variable (CWV) capability to drive hourly and bi‑hourly demand forecasts.

DTN supplied highly accurate raw weather data and, in partnership with the World Climate Service, developed long‑range CWV forecasts that cut manual CWV calculation time from up to one hour to 10 minutes or less, reduced human error and improved demand accuracy—helping National Grid meet tight tolerances (day‑ahead 9 million m3; two‑to‑five‑day 13.7 million m3; local zones ≈1% variance). DTN’s adaptable service also eased forecasting through COVID‑19 disruptions and supports National Grid’s transition to a greener grid.
