Case Study: Georgia Power achieves storm-ready G8 Summit operations with DTN's WeatherSentry

A DTN Case Study

Preview of the Georgia Power Case Study

Providing weather insights during a worldly high‑profile event

Georgia Power, the largest of five electric utilities in Southern Power Company serving more than 2 million customers across 57,000 square miles, was tasked in 2004 with providing daily weather reports for the high-profile G8 Summit at Sea Island, including monitoring hurricanes, thunderstorms and lightning. To meet that challenge, Georgia Power relied on DTN’s WeatherSentry Energy Edition with Lightning Manager (and PrecipTimer) to track real-time and forecast conditions and inform operational decisions.

DTN’s WeatherSentry tools let Georgia Power mark Sea Island as a monitored location, zero in on lightning and approaching storms, communicate daily with summit officials, and pre-position crews to protect linemen and minimize outages. The result: the summit proceeded without weather-related incidents, with DTN providing advance warning and actionable preparation time that kept power reliable and response-ready.
