Case Study: Spliethoff achieves fuel savings and safer, optimized weather routing with DTN

A DTN Case Study

Maximize Efficiency and Safety Through Optimized Weather Routing

Spliethoff, a Copenhagen-based shipping company, needed greater continuity and a more proactive weather-routing service across its divisions—its dry cargo fleet was using a different system while other divisions relied on DTN. After an 18‑month proof-of-concept and operational research project, DTN was engaged to provide its Ship Performance Optimization System (SPOS) and weather-routing services to deliver more accurate, unified passage planning and proactive operational support.

DTN implemented SPOS with initial voyage planning 24 hours before departure, daily route recalculations by Master Mariners and Meteorologists, and continuous monitoring of vessel speed with proactive alerts to captains. The result for Spliethoff has been safer, more efficient voyages, measurable fuel savings (typically $5,000–$15,000 per optimized route), and improved operational efficiency thanks to DTN’s daily updates—leveraging forecast accuracy (tomorrow ~99%, up to five days ~90%+) to keep routes optimal.
