Case Study: Shell Deutschland achieves increased profitability and extended sales hours with DTN’s Energy Digital Commerce marketplace

A DTN Case Study

Preview of the Shell Case Study

Increasing profitability through a better fuel buying experience

Shell Deutschland GmbH, a long-established fuels supplier serving millions of drivers in Germany, faced the challenge of digitizing the traditional spot fuels business and creating a single online marketplace where buyers could purchase from multiple suppliers without fragmenting the market. To solve this, Shell selected the Energy Digital Commerce marketplace (formerly OnlineFuels) — a platform that later became part of DTN — to provide a vendor-neutral, integrated online buying experience.

DTN helped implement the Energy Digital Commerce/OnlineFuels solution through the OnlineFuels Deutschland GmbH joint venture, integrating the marketplace with Shell’s back-office systems for full transaction streaming and real-time automation. The result for Shell: fully automated online fuel sales, extended sales hours beyond traditional office times, scaled sales operations, and dramatically reduced administrative burden — outcomes Shell credits with increased efficiency and stronger customer adoption.
