Case Study: AdventHealth achieves enhanced lightning safety with DTN WeatherSentry and OnGuard

How the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tackle record-setting lightning risks

AdventHealth Training Center, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 22‑acre practice and training complex, faced significant lightning risk in Florida—where storms can produce an average of 3,500 strikes a day—and lacked reliable, real-time lightning data. Staff previously monitored cable radar and local weather personalities and had to manually trigger sirens when lightning came within six miles, a stressful responsibility for non‑meteorologists. To solve this, AdventHealth selected DTN and deployed its WeatherSentry® weather alerting system alongside the OnGuard Siren Alerting System.

DTN tied WeatherSentry®’s location‑based forecasts, storm tracking and customizable lightning‑range alerts to the maintenance‑free OnGuard Siren Alerting System (three multi‑directional sirens and a dual‑color omni‑directional beacon), automating audio/visual evacuations and removing guesswork from go/no‑go decisions. The integrated solution gave staff peace of mind, reduced unnecessary delays by ensuring practices stop only when warranted, and improved turf and irrigation planning through clearer rainfall forecasts—saving water, time and money while increasing overall operational efficiency.
