Keep Austin Wired Guiding Water Efficient Behavior in a Mobile World

Austin Water, serving more than 1 million residents in a rapidly growing city with tightening water constraints, needed a better way to help homeowners understand and reduce water use while improving customer engagement and satisfaction. It selected Dropcountr’s customer water reporting software, including the HOME and CLEAR portals, to deliver personalized usage information through a native mobile app and support staff with more effective customer communication.

Dropcountr deployed the pilot in under six weeks and provided hourly usage data and automatic leak alerts for smart meter customers, along with neighbor comparisons, tips, rebates, and digital messaging. The results were strong: the pilot drove 9% aggregate water savings, 17% savings among the highest 20% of water users, and 41 million gallons saved in the first year, while enrollment exceeded the pilot scope by 178% and helped Austin Water avoid an estimated $215,809 in paper engagement costs. Customer response was also positive, with 88% saying they would recommend Dropcountr and 47% reporting greater satisfaction with Austin Water.
