How a 30-person nonprofit is helping refugees around the world

The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) is a 30–31‑person nonprofit founded in 2008 to provide legal representation to refugees and other vulnerable people targeted for their gender, religion, or sexuality. As demand grew, IRAP’s small intake team struggled to keep up—case selection, tracking, and sharing were bogged down by email, limiting the number of clients they could serve.

By moving case files and evidence to Dropbox, IRAP enabled secure file sharing and remote collaboration with a network of over 3,000 pro bono lawyers and law students. The technology let teams coordinate more efficiently and clients avoid carrying hard copies, allowing IRAP to scale from handling roughly 50 cases to 500 and to help resettle more than 3,100 individuals.
