Mapping a Plan for Clean Water: How Water for Good Uses Aerial Imagery

Water for Good, a nonprofit working to expand access to clean water in the Central African Republic, faced major logistical challenges in a country with limited roads, difficult terrain, and less than 30% reliable water access. To plan new solar-powered water distribution systems more effectively, the team needed a better way to survey villages, measure elevation, and determine where water points would be most accessible and sustainable.

Using DroneDeploy’s aerial imagery, orthomosaic maps, 3D models, and elevation data, Water for Good was able to remotely plan pipeline and water point placement with far greater accuracy. DroneDeploy helped the organization save over 80 days of field time each year, improve project design for communities of 1,500–4,000 people, and support over 95% functionality across its water points; in 2021 alone, 39 new piped water points and 22 manual pumps gave more than 25,000 people access to water.
