How OceanaGold Uses Drone Data to Manage Mine Restoration

OceanaGold, a multinational gold producer, needed a faster, more cost-effective way to manage mine restoration at its Reefton site in New Zealand. The team was spending significant time and money on external survey contractors and could previously only complete a full site survey once a year, making it difficult to track progress, plan tree planting, and report to stakeholders.

Using DroneDeploy’s drone mapping and data-sharing software, OceanaGold began capturing, processing, and analyzing site data in-house. DroneDeploy helped the team survey 550 hectares with over 4,000 photos in a single day, save at least AUD $30,000 annually, and streamline progress tracking, reporting, and bond review requirements with the Department of Conservation.
